Permanently focused on information, education and entertainment, and committed to promoting the improvement and expansion of its program listing, Drei Marc was a pioneer in implementing this tool on Pay-TV in 2003, making Closed Captioning (*) available on the Rubens Ewald Filho show – a project in partnership with the Telecine network. Based on its wide experience in the subtitling market, Drei Marc began to guide its structure so as to meet the demand of this important area of the audiovisual industry, which is present today in most free and Pay-TV channels.
Closed Captioning with the Drei Marc standard, in strict compliance with ABNT (Brazilian Association of Technical Standards), currently includes over 2,000 titles. With the partnership and support of one of the largest institutions representing the hearing impaired community in Brazil, the National Federation for the Education and Integration of the Deaf National Federation for the Education and Integration of the Deaf - FENEIS , Drei Marc is constantly trying to improve its Closed Captioning work and the resulting development of this market, based on the real needs of its users. - Initially oriented mainly to the hearing impaired, including the elderly, Closed Captioning was conceived in the US in the 70’s.
This system allows TV channels to offer more interaction and participation to an increasing segment of the population – an estimated 25 million people in Brazil, 6 million of whom are hearing-impaired according to the last census – a true process of social inclusion.
More than simply translating the content, Closed Captioning tries to describe what is exhibited in all its details; from dialogues to narratives, going through the ambience and sometimes giving meaning or climax to the work.
Closed Captioning allows the content to be aired in its original sound and with subtitles. In its prerecorded format, Drei Marc transcribes and adapts the audiovisual work, adding subtitles to the exhibition media. In the LIVE format, the Company uses stenotypy as the main tool for Closed Captioning production, providing faithful content with a hit rate in accordance with the percentage established by ABNT.
Closed Captioning is also an excellent tool for people learning or training their reading or writing skills in Portuguese, or even following another language by pressing simultaneously the “CC” and/or “SAP” buttons of the monitor or remote control.
Regarded as the most efficient way to entertain and inform through TV in places where many times audio is undesirable or impossible, Closed Captioning provides a major return to investors and exhibitors. Research done in the United States shows that the users read the support credits, buy the products and hire the services offered by the sponsors.
